Humanitarian Award: This award recognizes an alumnus or alumna for contributions to the betterment of the spiritual and material welfare of the less fortunate. Since 1968, the Alumni Association has honored an individual each year for their extraordinary contributions.
The award is presented at the annually with the Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Award, Monsignor James Lavin Award, Professor of the Year, and Tommie Award. The 2013 awards were presented on May 8th at the St. Thomas Day Dinner.

2013 Award Recipient Charles S. Lugemwa ’03 M.S.S.E. Charles Lugemwa is very grateful for his St. Thomas education and is using it to help improve health-care services in his native Uganda. Newsroom article 2012 Award Recipient Dr. Gordon Klatt ’64 Dr. Klatt is a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Wash. In 1985, as the lone participant, he created what today is the Relay for Life cancer fundraiser, which takes place nationwide and around the world each year. Video Newsroom Article 2011 Award Recipient Ryan Schlief '97 Ryan Schlief works as the Asia coordinator for Witness, an international human-rights organization that provides video equipment, training, and media advice to help groups around the world advance local human-rights campaigns. Video Newsroom Article 2010 Award Recipient Dr. Mary Crowley McDonald '87 McDonald received a master’s degree from St. Thomas in 1987, and led the revitalization of inner-city Catholic schools in Memphis as superintendent of the diocesan Catholic schools.
